Middle East Energy Transition

The Middle East is endowed with immense potential for renewable energy, particularly solar power. This study evaluates the present status, challenges, and opportunities in five resource-rich Middle Eastern countries: Iran, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Iraq, and the UAE. While the UAE leads with the highest solar energy share and ambitious clean energy plans alongside Saudi Arabia, development remains modest in Iran and Iraq due to political and economic challenges such as sanctions and conflicts. Unlocking the region's renewable energy potential requires enhanced social awareness, economic incentives, and strategic planning to address these barriers and promote sustainable power generation.
